About Us
"Way of the Sphere" is a unique style founded in the 1950's by Dennis Dwyer and his father, Bill, who was a Golden Gloves champion. Combining their knowledge of boxing, karate, and understanding how the body moves and reacts, they developed this system of self-defense. It was designed to enable anyone of any age, ability, or fitness level to learn to protect themselves in an effective manner.
American Karate Institute, Inc. was founded in 1985 by Dwyer's senior black belts. Using their knowledge from law enforcement, they further enhanced the style.
The current owners, Norm Dobo and Gerri Willever, relocated to the present facility where they continue the style as they guide their students to a better, more peaceful lifestyle.
Students of this style learn the art of karate as they progress in body, mind, and spirit. They will be developing good safety habits, defensive moves, awareness skills, and explore the energy around us as it relates to self-defense and to personal growth.

INSTRUCTORS
Norm Dobo, Sr., 3rd Degree Black Belt, is one of the current owners and a Chief Instructor of the Institute. Norm began his study of the martial arts under Dennis Dwyer, left and returned in the late 90's with his children to continue his studies and introduce them to karate as well. A true martial artist, Norm is dedicated to the continual growth of the school and each student. He enjoys exploring and learning more, and in turn helping our students to do likewise. He is always challenging all students to achieve to their highest potential, always helping each to grow in body, mind and most definitely spiritually.
Gerri Willever, 3rd Degree Black Belt, has been associated with the school since 1993. She began her martial arts study after completing The Women's Street Survival Seminar, offered by the former owners of the karate school. Gerri, a retired teacher of reading, is a co-owner and a Chief Instructor of the school. As one of the older members of the club, Gerri feels that the martial arts has something to offer everyone, no matter age or physical development. Gerri enjoys expanding the students' knowledge of martial arts through exploring weapons. She also looks forward to the Karate Kamp program offered each summer in August.
